ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY

When the Silver Spring Regional Services Center opened in June 1974, it was the County's first multi-service center established to bridge the gap between citizens' needs and public services by concentrating high-demand services in one location, thereby making them more accessible to those that needed them. The Center facilitates improved two-way communication between the County government and Silver Spring citizens and identifies significant neighborhood concerns and responses. The Center provides and coordinates such services as counseling, complaint resolution, employment and mass transit information, and other social services provided by County departments.

The Center is advised by a Citizens Advisory Board and an Urban District Advisory Committee whose members are appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Council.

PROCESSING PROCEDURES

General processing procedures consisted of discarding duplicates, unnecessary binders, and routine transmittals. Oversized documents and photographs were removed from the original location in their assigned series and placed in separate containers. Separation sheets were inserted in the original location within the folder to indicate the new location of any records placed elsewhere.

Preservation copying of newspaper clippings was performed whenever feasible. Records in folders were arranged, unless otherwise indicated, in forward chronological order, with undated records appearing at the end of the folder.

PROVENANCE

These materials were transferred from Rockville Library in 1997, 1998, and 1999. The issues of Silver Spring Spotlight were supplied by the Silver Spring Regional Services Center.
