Administrative History
The Office of Public Information originated in the late 1960's as the County Information Office and was part of the Office of the County Manager. In 1970, when the County Executive replaced the Manager, the County Information Office came under the auspices of the Executive's office.
The Information Office is responsible for the establishment of a comprehensive information program which maintains a continuing flow of information to County residents through the press, radio, and television, clarifies controversial issues, promotes understanding of the methods of County government, provides public relations assistance to County agencies, and promotes tourism.
By the mid-1980s the County Information Office advanced to an independent status. At this stage, the agency became the Department of Public Information and Volunteer Services, and consisted of four sections: the Information Office, Publications and Graphics, Information and Referral, and Volunter Services. When Volunteer Services was removed from the Department in the late 1980s, its name changed to the current designation Office of Public Information. Currently, the Office of Public Information consists of three sections. The Information Office Section provides information to the public about the activities of Montgomery County government, responds to media inquiries, produces a variety of publications, plans press conferences, groundbreakings, and other special events, produces proclamations and certificates of appreciation, and handles photography presentations. The Publications and Graphics Section provides design and production services and technical assistance for publications, forms, brochures, newsletters, and topical reports for County agencies. The Cable Programming Section, the latest addition to the Office of Public Information, coordinates programming and provides production assistance to County agencies in producing cable and video programs for County Cable 55. The Information and Referral Section is expected to transfer to the Department of Information and Telecommunications in 1992.
Scope and Content
The records of the Montgomery County Office of Public Information cover the years 1969 to 1980 and consist of audio tapes of radio programs and video tapes. The record group is arranged as two series:

Series I: Audio Tapes, 1969-1980 (14 cu. ft.)
This series consists of audio tapes of radio programs produced by the Office of Public Information. The programs address a wide variety of topics, ranging from information about general topics such as state legislative activities and the energy crisis, to local issues such as the Montgomery County construction program. Also included are tapes of self-help programs covering topics such as auto repairs.
The audio tapes are arranged chronologically by the date of broadcasting.

This series consists of video tapes produced by the Montgomery County Office of Information. The tapes contain programs on Black History, on Historic Women of Maryland, and document the inauguration of County Executive James Gleason in 1974.
