AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS
FROM THE
MONTGOMERY SOIL CONSERVATION DISTRICT
1937-1981
ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY
Aerial photographs provide important data about land development, agricultural land use, and environmental features, and were used by the Montgomery Soil Conservation District to assist with agricultural and environmental planning. Although it is clear that most of the photographs in the collection were taken by the United States Department of Agriculture, it is also possible that some were taken by the Defense Mapping Agency, as some of the earlier photographs show sites that would have been of military significance during World War II and were at one time classified. Today the photographs are primarily used for environmental assessments as they show the history of development on particular sites.
PROVENANCE
The photographs were donated to the Archives by the Montgomery Soil Conservation District in October 1998.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The six cubic feet of aerial photographs represent ten aerial surveys of Montgomery County performed from 1937 to 1981 by the United States Department of Agriculture.
NOTE ON ARRANGEMENT
The photographs are organized according to the year in which the aerial survey was performed. Within each year they are grouped in folders or flat files in numerical order by unique identification number, except in the case of photograph numbers 179# 2R to 279# 95 from 1979 which are housed in individual folders. The bulk of the images range in size from 9 ½ x 9 ½ to 12 x 12, although the collection also contains some oversized images (46 x 23) for the years 1943, 1944, and 1951, many of which are duplicates.
Complete indexes exist for the years 1951, 1970, and 1979 in the form of small prints of the photographs pasted together to form an overall view of the County. The identification numbers on the index can be matched to individual photographs. A copy of a topographical map of the Brighton Dam Watershed area of Howard and Montgomery Counties in 1943 serves as a partial guide to some of the photographs from that year.
